Ireland and The Wild Geese Lose a Friend.

"Ireland, with its rich Christian history and its outstanding patrimony of spiritual and cultural values, has an essential role to play in the building of the new Europe and the affirmation of its deepest identity."

    — Pope John Paul II, November 2003

    Courtesy of The Vatican
    Pope John Paul II
While the whole of the Catholic world mourns the death of Pope John Paul II today, none mourn him more than the Catholics of Ireland and the Irish Diaspora.

Many have criticized various positions Pope John Paul took while he lived, and now that he has passed away, but none could ever question his convictions or his courage. In September 1979, while "The Troubles" were raging, John Paul II chose to become the first Pope to visit that home of so many devote followers of the Catholic faith.

He visited Dublin, Drogheda, Clonmacnois, Galway, Knock, Maynooth and Limerick. His original travel plans had included a visit to Armagh to celebrate a Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral. But with the assassination of Lord Mountbatten and the killing of 18 British soldiers in Co. Down by the IRA, those plans were scrapped.

While he was in Drogheda, not far from the border, he pleaded for an end to the violence in the north. "On my knees I beg you, to turn away from the path of violence and to return to the ways of peace." He was a man of peace, and now he is at peace.

From all over the world, the Wild Geese say "Ar dheis De go raibh sé." (May he sit at the right hand of God.)
